The McCarty residence
An energy efficient home was constructed in Longmont, Colorado by carefully considering the site and the construction. The final design accomplished the goals of significant energy efficiency combined with livability. As a result of the care taken in design and construction, the total gas bill for January 1990 (which includes heating, cooking and domestic hot water) was only $29. The daylighting scheme is a very important aspect of this house. The entire length of the upper level bedroom and bath suite is brightly lit by the clerestory. The upper part of the partition wall between the hallway and bath is glazed to allow a considerable amount of direct light into the room. The lack of interior partition walls in the lower level of the house combined with lofted ceilings allows for air stratification. The clerestory is composed of both fixed and operable glass to allow for the ventilation of the house in the summer. The south elevation features Trombe walls and clerestory glazing for passive solar gain.
