A two-meter propane bubble chamber has been used to study the production of pions and protons in inelastic dC, HeC, CC, and multinucleon CC collisions at momentum 4.2 GeV/c per nucleon. The concept of total charge of an event (Q) has been used to determine the number of interacting protons. The multiplicity of ..pi.. mesons and the momentum and angular characteristics of ..pi../sup -/ mesons and protons have been analyzed as functions of the number of interacting protons. The data obtained are compared with calculations according to the Dubna cascade model. It is shown that this model qualitatively reproduces the dependences of the average momenta < p>, the rapidity , and the emission angle of ..pi../sup -/ mesons and protons on Q in the observed interactions. The existing discrepancies of the calculated and experimentally measured values decrease with increase of the mass number of the incident nucleus. The model poorly describes the dependence of the average transverse momentum < p/sub perpendicular/> of ..pi../sup -/ mesons on Q, and in reproduction of the dependence of < p/sub perpendicular/> on Q for protons it does not achieve even qualitative agreement.
