Maracaibo gas plants score new high

Ten offshore plants are compressing over 2 billion cu ft per day of associated gas in Lake Maracaibo. These facilities, serving 19 oil reservoirs, represent 610,000 installed hp, and a total investment of more than $182 million. Tabular data provide a listing of these gas- compression plants. A base map shows the approximate location of these repressuring plants in Lake Maracaibo. The 2-billion cu ft per day mark was surpassed in Oct. when Venezuelan Sun Oil Co. (VenSun) put on stream its unusual 150-MMcfd Lama 1 plant, featuring gas-compression, gas- injection, and liquid-extraction units on a single platform. Another capacity boost will be coming shortly, when Mene Grande Oil Co. dedicates it 40-MMcfd Menegas 1 plant, currently being tested. Among the new Lake Maracaibo gas- compression plants now on the drawing boards, the one to be owned and operated by Corporation Venezolana del Petroleo (CVP), will be the most unusual. The unit will be mounted on a barge and anchored off Pueblo Viejo, on the E.-central shore of the lake. The 145-MMcfd unit will have 2 turbine- driven compressors and will be remotely operated from CVP's headquarters at El Tablazo, some 50 miles to the north. The advantages of a floating gas-compression plant are obvious.
