VenSun's pilot flood key to Maracaibo oil recovery. [Venezuela]

Venezuelan Sun Oil Co., operator of one of the most prolific oil-producing areas ever found in Lake Maracaibo, operates 2 Lake Maracaibo blocks: Block 1 for itself, Venezuelan Atlantic Refining Co., and Texaco Seaboard Inc., and Block, 12 for itself, Venezuelan Atlantic, Texaco Seaboard, and Pan American Venezuela Oil Co. Block 1, granted to VenSun in 1957, is unusual in that it produces relatively clean 30 to 34 gravity oil; all the wells drilled, so far, have been productive; none are on artificial lift; and some of the wells traverse as many as 8 oil-bearing intervals, which entails unusually selective completions, both single and dual. VenSun started operating a pilot water injection plant in March 1965 to determine the size and type of equipment necessary to carry out a water injection program in the Eocene C-6U W. flank of the Lama field using water from Lake Maracaibo. Other necessary data normally associated with a pilot plant prior to considering a full-scale pressure maintenance program by water injection are also obtained. A packaged plant was built on shore and then installed on the injection well platform to evaluate the injectivity characteristics of the reservoir. VenSun is treating and injecting over 17,000 bpd on a test basis.
