Energy conservation: the private sector

Journal Article · · Forum Appl. Res. Publ. Pol.; (United States)

Americans demonstrated during the 1970s that they could reduce their energy consumption without stopping economic growth. Industry saw the opportunity in the situation, and an emerging industry responded with new, more efficient equipment and management services. Utilities developed both technologies and management programs to make energy use more efficient. When forecasts from the mid-1970s of high prices and energy shortages in the mid-1980s proved to be wrong, the public began returning to less efficient behavior and conservation industries are shifting into other areas. As long as there are buyers, however, there will be a continuous flow of new energy conserving techniques and technologies. The authors must establish a stable market in the private sector since another energy crisis is inevitable. 3 tables.
