Describes an imaginative new variable air volume air conditioning system installed in a historic structure in Philadelphia. Explains that with VAV, engineers can take full advantage of shifting loads that result from lights, occupancy, solar radiation, and equipment. Evaluates 5 common designs: simple VAV, VAV reheat or VAV dual duct, VAV with independent air or hydronic perimeter, VAV with constant zone volume, and pulsating zone VAV with constant system volume.
