Hearings on several bills proposed to amend the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act brought testimony from 24 witnesses representing government agencies, state Compact Commissions, the nuclear and nuclear medicine industries, ecologists and environmentalists, and electric utilities. The bills would extend the deadlines of the 1980 Act to allow more time to establish compacts in which states will participate in regional plans to develop waste facilities. Among the issues raised during the hearing were the optimum number of regional facilities. The testimony and additional material submitted for the record by other individuals and organizations follows the text of H.R. 862, H.R. 1046, H.R. 1083, H.R. 1267, H.R. 2062, H.R. 2635, and H.R. 2702, which authorize the granting of individual regional compacts.
