An overview is given of coal activity in Canada, primarily in the western provinces. Forty coal mines produced about 37 million metric tons in the previous year. Appropriations for expansion of coal utilization technology amounted to $125 million (U.S. dollars). Emphasis has also been given to methodology for transportation. Through August 1981, 1.5 million metric tons were moved from Thunder Bay Terminal. Nearly all of the 15 million tons exported from Canada in 1980 were moved to Japan. (JMT)
