The Canadian coal industry is looking forward to a period of expansion. Coal production reached 40 million tonnes in 1981. Domestic demand for thermal coal is growing and is expected to continue increasing throughout the rest of the 1980s. In western Canada, the domestic demand is based on the availability of low-cost, easily mineable subbituminous coal and lignite. In eastern Canada, the use of Nova Scotia coal is being expanded. Exports are of great importance. In 1981, 16 million tons were exported to 17 countries, the majority being in Asia. Work is now underway on 8 coal mine projects which could result in at least a doubling of exports by 1985.
