Acid rain and energy: a challenge for New Jersey

16 power plants in New York and New Jersey originally built to burn coal were converted to burn oil more than a decade ago but have now been reconverted to the burning of coal. This paper provides an overview of New Jersey's current energy-supply system and the state's policy on acid rain. Recommendations are made as to wehre the state program and acid rain policies may be improved. Strategies to reduce SO/sub 2/ pollution are discussed. The coal conversion option as it would influence the problem of acid rain is also addressed.
