US energy industry: 1984 revenues and earnings

Published reports from 550 energy companies show earnings of $13 billion, down 5% from the third quarter of 1983. Revenues climbed only 2% despite an increase in output because prices declined. These companies, which include petroleum, oilfield, coal, and gas and electric utilities, account for about one-third of total US corporate earnings. The petroleum sector accounts for most of the volatility in energy-industry earnings. 1 figure, 1 table.
