Journal Article · · Strategic Plan. Energy Manage.; (United States)

The first overall compilation of published reports from the US energy industry for 1985 show the revenues of 500 companies declined one per cent, to about $196 billion, despite a one per cent increase in energy output. Total earnings from continuing operations declined five per cent, to about $14 billion. The decline began in the second quarter of 1984, with the steepest drop (about five per cent) in revenues reported by petroleum and coal companies. Both natural gas pipelines and distribution companies also reported declining revenues. Revenues and earnings of the investor-owned electric utilities were up more than five per cent during the first quarter of 1985 because of increased unit revenues and marginally higher kilowatt-hour sales. Industrial sales were flat from 1984. 1 figure, 1 table.
