Energy industry performance review - earnings in 1984: great start - poor finish

The first overall compilation of published reports from the US energy industry for 1984 shows revenues were up 4%. A 5% increase in output more than offset declines in prices of oil and gas. Total earnings from continuing operations were unchanged from 1983. Fourth-quarter earnings, however, were down 17% from 1983, on a 2% increase in revenues. The steep year-end decline in earnings is in sharp contrast to the strong gains recorded in the first half of the year, when earnings increased 32% over 1983. A deterioration in energy earnings is apparent from the first through the fourth quarters 1984 for the whole industry and three major sectors.
