Differential cross sections for positively charged pion photoproduction on /sup 10/B, /sup 14/N, and /sup 16/O at E/sub ..gamma../ = 320 MeV were measured at six angles ranging from 35/sup 0/ to 120/sup 0/. The experiment was performed at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center. Real photons were generated by passing electrons through a 2% Ta radiator located upstream of the target. The mixed electron and photon flux then irradiated the target. Pions produced were momentum analyzed by the Medium Energy Pion Spectrometer (MEPS). The focal plane positions and angles of charged pions were determined by a pair of crossed vertical drift chambers. The particle identification system consisted of an aerogel Cerenkov counter and a stack of four scintillation counters. Angular distribution results for the /sup 10/B(..gamma..,..pi../sup +10/Be/sub g.s./ and /sup 14/N(..gamma pi../sup +/) /sup 14/C/sub g.s./ reactions were compared with the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) calculations of Tiator and Wright (TW). /sup 14/N is a special case in that the normally dominant Kroll-Ruderman term in production operator is expected to be significantly suppressed with the result that ..delta.. production term should be particularly important at this energy. The angular distribution data for the /sup 16/O(..gamma..,..pi../sup +/)/sup 16/N(1-,0-,2-,-) reaction is consistent with the data of Bosted et al. at 45/sup 0/ and 90/sup 0/. Calculations of Eramzhyan and co-workers at these two angles described the data well. However, no full angular distribution calculation at this energy is available at present.
