Coherent. pi. /sup 0/ photoproduction on /sup 4/He using 290 MeV photons

The differential cross-sections have been measured for the /sup 4/He(..gamma..,..pi../sup 0/)/sup 4/He reaction using photons of average energy E/sub ..gamma../ = 290 MeV at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center. The photons were produced by bremsstrahlung from monoenergetic electrons. Measurements were made at laboratory angles of 25, 40, 60, 70, and 80/sup 0/, by detecting the two photons from the decay of the ..pi../sup 0/. Since the ..pi../sup 0/ is measured directly, the first forward angle measurements of the differential cross-sections for coherent ..pi../sup 0/ photoproduction on /sup 4/He were obtained. Comparisons are made to previous data and to calculations in the Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA) and in the isobar-hole formalism. The good agreement between the present data and the prediction based upon the isobar-hole theory serves as an important test of this formalism.
