Polarizabilities of the pion and the production of f (1270) mesons in the process. gamma gamma --> pi pi

We have found the amplitudes which describe the production of the tensor meson f (1270) in the process ..gamma gamma --> pi pi... The comparison with experimental data indicates the existence of an additional contribution with I = 2 in the neighborhood of the f meson. Supposing that this contribution arises from the asymptotics, we can estimate from experiments on the process ..gamma gamma --> pi pi.. the sum of the polarizabilities of the pion: (..cap alpha..+..beta..)+ = 0.45 x 10/sup -3/ F/sup 3/, and (..cap alpha..+..beta..)0 = 1.71 x 10/sup -3/ F/sup 3/. We also discuss the effect of rescattering in the d wave.
