Learing to conserve: tough choices for South Carolina schools

Journal Article · · Res. Ex.; (United States)

South Carolina schools will have less money for educational programs unless they make their buildings more energy efficient. DOE costs projections show that energy costs per pupil could triple, from $184 in 1985 to $677 in the year 2000, since nearly 70% of the state's schools use natural gas. DOE recommends that action to increase state education budgets may not be as successful as using less energy. Conservation programs in some districts illustrate the savings, although some districts need technical as well as financial support for effective conservation. Alternative financing for conservation could involve outside investors who would benefit from tax incentives.
