The purpose of this study was to determine what selected Illinois school districts have done, plan to do, or problems they have encountered in their attempt to conserve energy. If the school districts of different demographic size, enrollment, type or resources have approached conservation in some unique form, then that information could serve as a model for other districts. Indications were that many schools have developed and implemented some type of energy conservation measures that would serve as a way to curb expenditures and preserve their educational programs. It was recommended that school districts consult professional architects or engineers before attempting retrofit modifications. Each school could conduct an energy audit and subscribe to a building profile reporting service to evaluate the effectiveness of measures taken. Furthermore, it was recommended that technical assistance be provided to school districts seeking advice on a low cost basis. It was concluded that energy conservation in public schools is essential to preserve our natural resources and continue our educational programs without sacrificing the future. However, this action will be the direct result of commitment and resolve in the taking of positive steps toward conservation and the active search for solutions to stop energy waste.
