Safety, convenience, and fuel savings are the benefits offered by today's automatic ignition devices for appliances. The types available include intermittent ignition devices that light the pilot burner on each call for heat, direct spark ignitions that light the burner directly, and hot surface ignitions that use silicon carbide elements to reach ignition temperatures. Because of their inherent advantages, hot surface ignition systems might totally replace spark systems in new equipment designs, particularly those of gas-fired space-heating systems.
