Experiences with preheaters

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5862677
Liquid phase preheaters are discussed in a report originally including tables and diagrams not given in this section of the microfilm. It can be found on TOM-164-794-806. The preheater conditions in the various plants were discussed as outlined in Table I. The three groups distinguished were: (1) Welheim and Wesseling, where the entire feed was run through preheaters and about 70% of the heat input into the first converter was recovered in the heat exchangers, (2) Scholven and Nordstern, where only gas heat exchange was used and only about 33% of the recoverable heat was recovered (Here the bituminous coal paste caused difficulties, due to swelling, in the heat exchangers, as compared to brown coal), (3) Poelitz and Upper Silesia, where the thin paste and input gas together were passed through heat exchangers, while the thick paste was heated separately; about 50% of the heat could be exchanged by this process. There was a little more detail about each group in the report, and also the wall temperatures of these three groups were compared. Five cases were discussed in the report; they were about: (1) preheater installing, (2) the effect of the increased concentration of the thin and thick pastes, (3) the effect of the operating method with cold paste, successfully used at Nordstern, (4) the favorable effect of a gas heat exchanger, and (5) the use of a preheat converter, which was installed ahead of the four operating converters, and which allowed the preheater to heat the material to 400/sup 0/C instead of 425/sup 0/C.
