Accidents and damages in hydroworks

Bomb damage to various plants up to March 1941 proved generally to inflict no crippling damage. Operations were soon resumed. Damage by failure of NIO material included: (1) Nordstern: fire in preheater in May 1940 due to a crack in double bend, preheater explosion in October 1940 due to a plug in return bend being blown out, and bursting of NIO piece in filling with nitrogen at 680 atm in January 1941, (2) Poelitz: cracks in hairpin coils in two electric preheaters in September of 1941. Accidents by runaway of converters included: (1) Leuna: stall destroyed by bursting of S2 tube installed in hot place; (2) Nordstern: fire in coal stall when emergency expansion line broke; and (3) Poelitz: converters out of control due to gas failure with circulation line clogged and gas inlet line clogged. Other accidents and damage included damage to expansion machine in Leuna, explosion in coal-drying plant in Scholven, room explosion in CO/sub 2/ wash at Nordstern, leaks in circulating lines at Nordstern, and an explosion in stall during repairs at Poelitz. This information was gathered from 1930 to 1940.
