Design and properties of materials of hydrogenation at the T-52 installation at Scholven and Poelitz (condensed translation)

Technical Report ·

The laying out of stalls and preparation for installation was to be done by I. G. Ludwigshafen. The stalls were to be sent to Leuna. Others were to be delivered directly to Scholven and then to Uhde. The originally intended steam preheater for the T52 installation would cause difficulties in operation as well as high operating costs. Possible installation of electric preheaters was discussed. Heat excanger calculations were given showing a final conclusion of a 600 mm diameter heat exchanger, 12 m long, with 301 tubes. The cooler needed to remove 1,300,000 k cal/hr by a cooling of 45/sup 0/C required a surface area of 125 m/sup 2/. Estimates for the piping and preheater requirements were given as 120 m in length, average temperature of 150/sup 0/, 285 m/sup 3/ gas volume, and 10 m/sup 3/ feed volume. The velocity reached for a 90 tube exchanger was 13 m/sec. Change in pressure was 1.6 atm. The velocity in the converter was .18 m/sec and change in pressure was .15 atm (consideration of the hose through the cover increased it to .5 atm). The resistance of the heat exchanger was primarily a hydrostatic resistance and a variation of 1.0 in either direction was allowed. The circulation pipe was made with a 9 mm diameter, and according to computations, its resistance was .5 atm. The total resistance of the stall was about 15 atm. The circulating pumps were normally laid out with 20 atm difference in pressure. Table I compared Scholven and Poelitz with such information as tons/yr of T52, (22,000, Scholven; 12,000, Poelitz), temperatures, gases, etc. Table II compared thicknesses of insulation in 500 and 600 mm heat exchangers for Brabag, Scholven, Nordstern, Italian plants, and Leuna. 2 tables
