Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5859396
Equipment used in direct liquefaction processes is subjected to mixtues of coal fines, ash, and oil derived from high-sulfur coal in a high-pressure and high-termperature environment. This report reviews the experiences and development of block valves used in high-pressure letdown service and other areas of the H-Coal Pilot Plant in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. Included are block-valve-cycle data and information pertaining to seat materials and various coatings and substrates used for the balls. Inspection data obtained after Coal Run No. 11 are presented. Valves from five manufacturers are discussed, with information on block valves that performed well and on those that failed.
