H-Coal Pilot Plant: letdown-valves experience - Run Nos. 8, 9, 10

Equipment used in direct liquefaction processes is subjected to mixtures of coal fines, ash and oil derived from high sulfur coal in a high pressure and high temperature environment. This report reviews the experiences and development of letdown valves used in high pressure letdown service at the H-Coal Pilot Plant in Calettsburg, Kentucky. Included is the operating experience of the various letdown valves used, development of trim design and trim material selections for Coal Run Nos. 8, 9 and 10. Valves used during this period were Cameron, Kieley and Mueller, Hammel-Dahl, Masoneilan Sasol and Masoneilan Prototype.
