Separator qualification for aerospace nickel-cadmium cells

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5857665

Because of anticipated shortages of Pellon 2505ML separator, a joint Government program was proposed to qualify a new separator for nickel cadmium (NiCd) cells. Cells have been procured with old and new separator for characterization and test at the Naval Weapons Support Center, Crane (NWSC). Cell packs will be life tested at NWSC in low earth orbit (LEO) and geo-synchronous (GEO) orbit under real time and accelerated conditions. Preliminary qualification data will be available in about 1 year with more complete data in about 3 years. A new separator will be evaluated by simulated testing in advance of actual space usage.
