Advanced sealed nickel-cadmium battery cells of two types, Magnum{trademark} NiCd and Super NiCd{trademark}, are on test at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Crane, IN, under several NASA GSFC contracts. These cells, manufactured by the Power Systems Department of the Electronics Division of Eagle-Picher Industries, utilize state-of-the-art materials and processes. Notable are the two separator materials and the associated preparation process. This paper provides a brief introduction and background of the Magnum{trademark} NiCd and Super NiCd{trademark} advanced sealed nickel-cadmium battery cells, results of parametric testing conducted at EPI`s Power Systems Department on separator materials, and an evaluation of the performance of the cells on test.
