Unit cost delays thyristor use in hvdc converters

Journal Article · · Electr. World; (United States)
OSTI ID:5855639

Their present high cost prevents thyristors from replacing mercury arc valves as hvdc converters, especially as a large number of them are needed in series to attain voltage ratings on the order of 100 kV. Yet these relatively efficient static devices occupy less space, operate with simpler circuitry, need less maintenance, and are easily replaced when they fall.
