Will thyristors substitute for mercury in hvdc valves

High voltage dc power transmission is technically and economically competitive today with extra high voltage ac. In the future, with semiconducting devices developed to the point where they can be substituted for mercury arc valves hvdc may offer even greater advantages. Recent advances in semiconductor technology have led to commercially applicable power thyristors and diodes for 3 to 4 kV peak.
