The use of thyristors for hvdc converters has been considered as a serious possibility and it is a general opinion that in the not too distant future, thyristors should begin to replace mercury arc valves in hvdc schemes. Higher cost of thyristors is considered at present, as the major factor standing against their use. It is also accepted that their use in hvdc schemes would involve a lage number in series to attain the voltage ratings of the order of 100 kV.
