To upgrade prover measurement resolution and provide a verification procedure for certain meter-history items, Peoples Gas designed an on-line minicomputer-based meter-proving system that increases the availability and reliability of meter-test data to the management information systems within the central computer and greatly alleviates the increasing maintenance problems experienced with aging prover controls. By accumulating the test data from the meter shop and sending it via telephone line to the central computer, the new method eliminates the use of meter-test cards for data entry and thus reduces data-handling errors. In parallel tests against the former method, the new system not only supplied the information within 24 hr of the test but also gave a tighter standard deviation of meter-test results.
