Journal Article · · Gas Ind., Nat. Gas Ed.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7074180
Gas utilities will soon have further data on automatic meter reading as a result of comprehensive (9 to 14 month) test covering the entire town of Ashland, Nebr. (population 2000). Participating in the test are the Peoples Natural Gas Co. division of Northern Natural Gas Co., Omaha Public Power District, Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Co., and the Municipal Water Department. The system is expected to reduce reading costs, errors, and billing time, make load studies easier, and enable immediate rereading of a customer's meter if there is a billing question. The AMR system being tested was developed by Darco, Inc., of Omaha. It utilizes existing telephone lines, a low-cost modification to meters, MOS/LSI transponders, and a microprocessor central controller. When the system is completely installed, more than 3000 meters will be sending readings to the microcomputer controller.
