The MINPACK project aims to develop a systematized collection of quality optimization software. The package MINPACK-1 solves systems of nonlinear equations and nonlinear least-squares problems. First this package is outlined, and then some of the design principles employed during the development of MINPACK-1 are discussed. These concepts are robustness, scale invariance, interface routines, and reverse communication. (RWR)
