Model problems for large-scale optimization
- Argonne National Lab., IL (United States)
The large-scale problems from the MINPACK-2 collection are models of applications that arise in areas such as fluid dynamics, elasticity, combustion, molecular design, chemical kinetics, lubrication, optimal design, and superconductivity. Software is provided to evaluate the function and Jacobian-vector products for systems of nonlinear equations and nonlinear least squares, and the function, gradient, and Hessian-vector products for minimization problems. The sparsity pattern of the problems is also provided. We outline the design of this software and some of the lessons learned during the development of this collection. We emphasize various topics, among them, the importance of graphical interfaces, the use of this collection for the evaluation of optimization software, the role of problem formulation, and connections with programming environments.
