Foreseeing the need for future tie-ins as more offshore gas wells come on stream, designers of Houston Natural Gas Corp.'s new 20-in intrastate gas pipeline elected to provide for underwater tie-ins - which are cheaper than shore-based alternatives - by running the line about 6 miles offshore and parallel to the Texas coast for some 68 miles before coming inland. Special tap valves installed every 6 miles will facilitate future connections with offshore wells.
