A distinguishing feature of coke batteries from other metallurgical equipment having refractory linings and subjected to various types of effects is that they are in operation for prolonged periods without major maintenance involving full shutdown. In distinction from other metallurgical equipment, coke batteries are repaired without shutdown of the entire battery, but only removing 4 to 10 (7 to 19%) of the ovens from operation while maintaining normal operation of the basic unit. The number of ovens shut down for maintenance depends on: (1) the structural features of the heating system; (2) the availability of maintenance personnel; (3) the availability of refractory materials, coking equipment and other materials when the maintenance is begun; and (4) the possibility of providing nearby customers with coke. The most vital part of battery maintenance is the relining of the heads of the heating walls to a depth of 4 or more flues. The principal specifications in the relining of heating walls during maintenance of batteries of the PK-2K type with any duration of service are given.
