All-union conference on the overhaul of coke-oven batteries

In November 1976, the All-Union Conference on the Repair of Coke-Oven Linings was held in Novokuznetsk. Participants included the foremen of coke-oven departments and workers engaged in the repair of coke-oven linings. The participants reviewed the experience gained in the overhaul of coke-oven linings at the Kuznetsk I and SW, where timely preventive maintenance and capital repairs have kept coke-oven batteries with service lives of more than 40 years in good condition. Considerable experience has been amassed in recent years in preventive maintenance involving such techniques as guniting with cements utilizing a phosphate binder, relining of heating walls to different depths, repair of oven ends, patching and replacing of oven soles, repair of the gas-conduit zone and regenerators, relining of oven crowns, and various types of heating-system adjustments (including replacement of regulation devices, etc.). It was noted that some types of repairs are carried out by different methods with different degrees of efficiency. This is true, for example, of techniques for relining walls to different depths, providing good sealing between old and new brickwork, proper determination of the amount of repair required, the need for heating or cooling of the regenerators during major repairs, the time or which ovens must be cooled and heated, etc. The conference called attention to deficiences in the preparation for and organization and conduct of individual types of repairs.
