A battery of 65 coke ovens of capacity 41.6 m/sup 3/ was commissioned at the Karaganda Integrated I and SW in 1977; it was the fourth such battery in the USSR and the second in the East. The ovens were built of silica brick of density 2.34 g/cm/sup 3/. The underjet heating system was designed to burn 100% coke-oven gas. The heating level was set at 1100 mm. The heating walls were constructed to provide for combustion-product recirculation through pairs of integrated flues. To allow a wider study of heating control, an experimental section of 10 coke ovens was constructed with additional combustion-product recirculation on the lines of the PK-2K system. A wide regenerator was constructed beneath each coke oven, and separated into two halves by a longitudinal partition and several sections by transverse partitions. The regenerator sloping ducts and burner sockets were located in the flues on the longitudinal axis of the heating walls. The flame length in the heating walls is regulated by varying the aperture of the combustion-product recirculation ports, providing additional recirculation, adjusting the dimensions of the dividers and optimizing the excess air ratio. The results of the investigation and regulation program have shown that No. 7 battery is a high-productivity unit with good technological and thermotechnical performance indices which can be further improved as operating experience accumulates. The regulation of the thermotechnical conditions in No. 7 battery required prolonged, complicated and costly efforts before the required uniformity was achieved longitudinally, vertically and in the end sections.
