Financing structures for internal use cogeneration projects

There are major differences in the financing structures available for cogeneration projects used by industries, hospitals and the like to generate their own steam and electricity. This article sets forth the major alternative structures and the key differences between them on such major business issues as the amount of the user's energy savings, risk allocation, standby power availability, off-balance sheet financing and the price at which the user can ultimately acquire the cogeneration project. The key is to be aware that there are alternatives and to pick the structure that best meets the user's needs on these business issues. This article summarizes from the user's perspective the seven major alternatives for structuring a cogeneration project that provides steam and electricity to the user.
