Begun in August 1980, the western leg (Phase I) of the Canadian prebuild portion of the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System was completed in February 1981. Construction of 132 miles of 36-in. line within a tight time schedule and in territory covered by some of the most difficult terrain in Canada involved several pipeline-construction innovations in terms of machinery, pipeline padding, ditching, and tunneling. Marine Pipeline Construction of Canada, Ltd., installed 55 miles of the line for Foothills Pipe Lines (Yukon) Ltd.; Banister Pipelines was the contractor for 77 miles.
