A 260-mile long direct current transmission system, which will ensure a constant power supply for Sardinia and enable 200 MW of electricity to be exported to the Tuscany area of the Italian Mainland, is now operative. The maximum output of 200 MW has already been successfully transmitted between the terminal stations. Proving tests on the system began in December 1966, and will continue until full demand is made on it from the Italian Mainland. This is the longest underwater power cable in the world and the seventh dc system.
