Advantages of dc over ac for submarine cable links more than counter balance the economic factors involved by the need for suitable terminal equipment. When the power transmitted exceeds a certain limit, dc is the only practicable solution. The advantages of dc transmission are more strongly emphasized for insulated cables than for overhead lines. The stress in dc cables, being static, is much more easily borne than the ac stress. The stress can, therefore, be increased with a resultant increase in transmissible power for dc cables.
