How a consulting firm looks at energy management

An energy-consumption index (ECI) based on computer analyses of monitored energy use and weather data was developed as a building energy-management tool. The system gives a more true energy-conservation picture by tracking energy-use trends in which degree-days are divided into Btu per square foot use instead of by the traditional method of calculating Btu per square foot use for different heating seasons. The efficiency of a building, as expressed by its ECI figure, will help engineers estimate the potential energy savings of new projects and to maintain the desired level of building efficiency. Other indices involving fuel use and electric demand can be integrated into the analyses, which are designed to operate on mini- and micro-computers by nontechnical personnel.
