A proven computerized energy-management method for commercial and industrial buildings offers a good rate of return for businesses with high energy costs. Data from on-going management systems illustrates how retrofitting has allowed savings by means of computerized monitoring and energy-utilization analysis. Computer printouts are used to describe the mechanics of a feasibility study as the first step. The decision to invest in energy-management systems should evolve from discussions of the study results and should include the building owners, managers, and operating personnel throughout the design, construction, and servicing stages. Personnel training is crucial to a successful management system.
