Coal-Waste Artificial Reef Program. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5802286
The Coal Waste Artificial Reef Program (C-WARP) has investigated the environmental effects of disposing of fly ash and scrubber sludge in the ocean in the form of stabilized blocks. An artificial reef was constructed in the Atlantic Ocean with 500 tons of coal waste blocks on 12 September 1980. This report summarizes the studies made from March 1979 through August 1983. The effort included laboratory and field studies to (1) measure physical block properties; (2) examine mineral phases; (3) determine the blocks' chemical changes in seawater; (4) analyze leachate characteristics; and (5) collect environmental monitoring data on the reef. Separate analytics have been done on individual sections of the report and are contained in EDB. 48 figs., 14 tabs.
