Excitation functions for the /sup 176/Lu(/sup 22/Ne,..cap alpha..xn)/sup 194-x/Au reactions were investigated. At ion energies above 5 MeV/nucleon cross sections are appreciable for ..cap alpha..xn reactions with x = 0, 1, 2, and 3. Experimental results were analyzed by taking into account the distribution of the initial excitation energy in the residual nuclei after ..cap alpha.. particles have been emitted. The best fit to the experimental data is achieved by assuming that the reaction proceeds through a peripheral collision which leads to the formation of a heavy product, /sup 194-x/Au, with a large amount of angular momentum.
