A hearing on proposed legislation, H.R. 2802, focused on the role of technology innovations in the treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes. The bill is in response to the slow pace in cleaning up identified sites and an effort to enhance the cooperation among agencies which implement the Superfund. Among the issues raised during the hearing were the need for and funding limits for research by the Environmental Protection Agency, the location of 10 technology demonstration projects, and permitting procedures. Witnesses also spoke of institutional and enforcement problems as well as reviewing and assessing the available technologies.
