Representatives of manufacturing firms, citizen groups, waste management firms, and both state and federal waste management agencies testified at a field hearing in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to review New Hampshire's experience in dealing with contamination from toxic wastes. The state's 13 priority sites selected for cleanup under the Superfund program illustrate the risk to rural areas from the movement of contaminants in the ground water. The purpose of the hearing was to receive comment on proposed legislation calling for the use of innovative and permanent cleanup technologies at these sites and on federal programs to control the pollution of ground water. Witnesses described both their fears and concerns about hazardous wastes, but some praised the quality of the state's cleanup program. An appendix with additional correspondence and statements follows the testimony of the nine witnesses.
