Conference · · Energy Technol. (Wash., D.C.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5760719

A multi-billion dollar telecommunications opportunity faces utilities with the right-of-way, familiarity with cable installation and maintenance, communications experience, local market presence, and ability to raise capital. Utilities which are seriously considering fiber optics have concluded that they need to really understand the market potential and the risks. He addresses such issues as market size, services needed, customers, competition, and market entry strategy in light of the current market environment. The author concludes that the window of opportunity for entering the market is closing fast, but that utility companies can install and maintain fiber less expensively than most of their competitors.
