  1. City Utilities of Springfield, MO (United States)

This article addresses the rapid and evolving changes in telecommunication services and the need of the Electric Power Industry to anticipate the impacts and opportunities of new technology. Telecommunications services are envisioned to increase at virtually an exponential rate during the next several years. Many public power systems are now involved in microwave, fiber optic cable, coaxial cable, twisted pair copper wiring, radio systems and wireless communications. Results of a Telecommunications needs study by the City Utilities of Springfield, Missouri, are discussed. Public utilities are viewed as being in a unique position to construct broadbands highways for the benefits of their communities. Telephone companies and cable television operations presently find themselves with billions of dollars invested in a communications plant which is largely incapable of functioning as a broadband highway. Implementation of the information highway will require action from all three industry segments.
