Solving gas-processing problems. Part 5. Judging compression horsepower

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)

Compression horsepower requirements are of prime importance in most gas-processing operations. The approach used to estimate horsepower requirements for both reciprocating and centrifugal compressors synthesizes an ideal process and then adjusts the calculated results by an efficiency factor. For the case of pure, or nearly pure, components (such as a refrigeration system), designers can use a pressure-enthalpy diagram to calculate compression horsepower. For gas mixtures, a number of equations are available that are based on either an adiabatic reversible process or a polytropic process that allows for heat exchange between the gas and the surroundings during compression. Two sets of comparative calculations demonstrate the differences between these two approaches.
